Weight Loss Analysis When Use The Thermo Gravimetric Analyzer

The analysis of the thermo gravimetric analyzer is abbreviated as thermo gravimetric analysis, which is a method of measuring the relationship between the mass of a substance and the temperature or time under the control of the program temperature. The thermo gravimetric analyzer is mainly composed of three parts: temperature control system, detection system and recording system. The application of thermo gravimetric analysis is mainly in metal alloys, geology, polymer materials research, drug research, etc.

Thermo gravimetric analysis is a method of measuring the relationship between the mass of a substance and temperature or time under program control temperature. By analyzing the thermo gravimetric curve, you can know the quality-related information such as the composition, thermal stability, thermal decomposition, and products of the sample and its possible intermediate products.

Micro-entropy thermo gravimetric analysis can be derived from thermo gravimetric analysis, also called derivative thermo gravimetric analysis, which is a technique for recording the first derivative of the TG curve with respect to temperature or time. The result of the experiment is the micro-entropy thermo gravimetric curve, that is, the DTG curve. The mass change rate is the ordinate, and the top-down indicates the decrease; the abscissa is the temperature or time, and the left to right indicates the increase.

The main feature of thermo gravimetric analysis is strong quantification, which can accurately measure the mass change and rate of change of the substance. According to this characteristic, it can be said that as long as the mass of a substance changes when it is heated, it can be studied by thermo gravimetric analysis. The thermo gravimetric curve chart shows the physical and chemical changes that can be detected by thermo gravimetric analysis. These physical changes and chemical changes all have quality changes, such as sublimation, vaporization, adsorption, desorption, absorption, and gas-solid reaction.

Thermo gravimetric analyzer can analyze the following characteristic points for a weight loss/weight gain step:

  1. TG curve extrapolation starting point: the intersection point of the tangent line at the level before the TG step and the tangent line at the inflection point of the curve, which can be used as the reference temperature point for the initial occurrence of the weight loss/gain process, and is mostly used to characterize the thermal stability of the material .
  2. TG curve extrapolation end point: the intersection point of the tangent line at the level behind the TG step and the tangent line at the inflection point of the curve can be used as the reference temperature point for the end of the loss/gain process.
  3. DTG curve peak value: the temperature/time point where the mass change rate is the largest, corresponding to the inflection point on the TG curve.
  4. Quality change: Analyze the quality difference between any two points on the TG curve to indicate the quality change of the sample caused by a weight loss (or weight gain) step.
  5. Residual mass: The residual mass of the sample at the end of the measurement.

In addition, in the software, the inflection point of the TG curve (equivalent to the peak temperature of DTG), the starting point of the extrapolation of the DTG curve (closer to the reaction starting temperature in the true sense), and the end point of the extrapolation of the DTG curve (closer to the The true end temperature of the reaction) and other characteristic parameters are labeled.
