AATCC 22 Water repellency test: spray method
- Purpose and scope
The standard applies to any textile fabric, regardless of whether it has been treated for water repellency. This standard can determine the water-wetting resistance of fabrics, and is not suitable for textiles treated with water-repellent properties, especially plain woven fabrics.
Because the instrument is simple and portable, and the test procedure is relatively concise, this standard is particularly suitable for factory product control. Since this standard cannot measure the penetration of water droplets into the fabric, it is recommended not to use this standard to evaluate the rain penetration performance of waterproof fabrics.
The test results of this standard are related to the initial water repellency and wetting properties of the finishing of fibers, yarns and fabrics, and have little to do with the structure of the fabric.
- Principle
Under the specified conditions and procedures, spray water on a tight sample to form a wetting pattern on the surface, the size of which is related to the water repellency of the fabric. The evaluation result is determined by comparing it with the standard pattern.
- Apparatus
AATCC spray tester, 250ml graduated cylinder, deionized water.

- Test method
(1). Fix the 180X180mm test sample tightly on a ring with a diameter of 152mm to make its surface smooth and free of wrinkles.
(2). Place the ring with the fabric on the support of the test instrument so that the center of the nozzle is aligned with the center of the ring.
(3). Make the warp of the fabric follow the direction in which the water drops on the fabric surface, and add 250ml of water at 27±1℃ to the funnel of the funnel tester, so that it will be sprayed in 25-30s, and avoid mixing when adding liquid Funnel contact. The movement of the funnel will change the relative position of the nozzle and the fabric.
(4). The spraying time must be controlled within 25-30s, otherwise, check whether the small holes are enlarged or blocked.
(5). Hold one side of the ring, tap a hard object on the opposite side of the ring, and the test sample faces the object, then turn the ring 180 degrees and repeat the above action once.
- Rating level
(1) 100 points: No water or wetting on the upper surface;
(2) 90 points: There is a small amount of water on the upper surface, which is irregularly wetted or wetted;
(3) 80 points: the upper surface is wetted by the drench;
(4) 70 points: all upper surface is partially wetted;
(5) 50 points: all upper surface is completely wetted;
(6) 0 points: All the upper surface is partially wetted and the surface sinks.
