How does the carbon black content tester work? What are the precautions

The Carbon Black Content Tester is a thermal analysis instrument mainly used to determine the actual percentage of carbon black content in plastic and polyethylene materials. The so-called carbon black test is obtained by gravimetric analysis of the sample after pyrolysis under nitrogen protection. So, how does the carbon black content tester perform the carbon black test? What are the specific methods of operation? These issues are often of concern to everyone. Let’s take a closer look at the small instrument below.

Operation method of carbon black content tester:

  1. Before testing, check whether the instrument can work normally and power on.

  1. Heat the burning boat to a scorching heat, then cool it in a desiccator for at least 30 minutes, and weigh it. Put a certain amount of polyethylene samples into the combustion boat, weigh them together, and subtract the weight of the combustion boat from the weight to obtain the weight of the polyethylene sample.

  1. First place the combustion boat with the sample in the middle of the quartz tube of the heating furnace, then insert a rubber plug of an exhaust glass tube into one end of the glass combustion tube, and adjust the atmosphere device so that the oxygen content is less than 0.5%. Nitrogen was passed through the quartz tube at the required flow rate, and this flow rate was maintained during subsequent heating.

  1. Move the combustion boat to the mouth of the instrument, do not take it out immediately; after the combustion boat cools down slightly in nitrogen, take out the combustion boat, then cool it in a desiccator for 20-30 minutes and re-weigh it, minus the weight of the combustion boat , to determine the weight of the residue.

  1. Then put the combustion boat into the glass combustion tube, and adjust the atmosphere device to pass oxygen instead of nitrogen into the quartz tube in the glass combustion tube at an appropriate flow rate to make the residual carbon black burn completely. The combustion boat was taken out, cooled and weighed, and the weight of the residue was determined by subtracting the weight of the combustion boat.

  1. According to the data obtained from each measurement, calculate the carbon black content by formula, or input the data into the software for one-key calculation.

What are the precautions for the use of carbon black content tester?

  1. When taking out the burning boat and putting it into the furnace body, be careful to avoid damage to the furnace body.

  1. When the combustion boat is just taken out of the furnace body, it must be cooled first, and after it has been cooled for a period of time, the lower part can be operated to avoid touching it to avoid burns.

  1. During the experiment, do not touch the furnace body to avoid burns.

  1. Make sure that the nitrogen and oxygen are switched correctly during the test to avoid experimental errors.

  1. Before operating the carbon black content tester, operate it according to the operating instructions, and do not operate it arbitrarily to avoid experiment failure or malfunction.

  1. After the test is completed, wait for the instrument to cool down, turn off the power, and place it in a safe place.
